In March 2026, eScience published the work of Dr. Li Chunxue (Fujian University of Technology) and Prof. Liao Guangfu (Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University) on proton-coupled electron transfer for photocatalytic H2O2 photosynthesis (first authors: Wang Zhaoqiang and Ding Guixiang; DOI: 10.1016/j.esci.2026.100562).
Carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils (f-CNF) were introduced to bridge CdS/PCN, constructing a hydrogen-bond network on top of the S-scheme heterojunction.
The system delivered a high photocatalytic H2O2 activity of 2867 umol L-1 h-1 in pure water.
The enhancement originates from the synergy of electrons and protons: the CdS/PCN S-scheme mechanism preserves strong oxidative and reductive electrons, while the dense carboxyl groups of CNF act as proton donors, together accelerating the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process that governs H2O2 photosynthesis.
