Installing and Maintaining Photochemical Light Sources: Output Decay and Lifetime Management

Light sources age from the first hour of operation. Treating them as install-and-forget equipment gradually corrupts every photometric number a lab produces. Managing a source means installing it correctly, maintaining it routinely, tracking decay and knowing when to replace.

Installation Essentials

Seat the lamp in a clean housing without touching the envelope, skin oils create hot spots and shorten lamp life. Align the lamp to the reflector axis, then verify the beam footprint at the working plane. Confirm cooling airflow or water flow before the first power-on, and check that the electrical interlocks work.

Routine Maintenance

Clean the output window and filters on a schedule, dust and deposits attenuate unevenly and shift the effective spectrum. Inspect connectors and cooling paths, and re-verify intensity after any maintenance that touches the optical path.

Judging Output Decay

Do not rely on visual brightness. Keep a fixed measurement protocol, same meter, same position, same settings, and record readings against cumulative lamp hours. Replace the lamp when intensity at the working plane falls below the level your experiment requires, not when it fails completely. Spectral drift can precede intensity loss, so for UV-critical work, periodic spectral checks are worthwhile.

The Lamp-Hour Log

Record start and stop times per lamp, cumulative hours, measured intensity checkpoints and every maintenance event. The log turns vague impressions into a trend line, supports replacement forecasting, and documents that reported intensities were measured with a healthy source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does a xenon bulb last? Typical rated lifetimes are several hundred to about a thousand hours; actual life depends on power cycling and cooling. The log decides, not the rating.

Q: Do LEDs need the same management? Yes, with longer intervals. LED output also declines with junction temperature and hours.

Perfectlight supplies replacement xenon bulbs, xenon sources and LED sources, all supported under radiation light source solutions.
